Answers to Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
I understand that starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions. Below are answers to some of the most common inquiries to help guide you through the process and provide clarity as you begin your journey toward healing.
Getting Started
Starting therapy is a big step, and it's normal to have questions. Here’s what you can expect as we begin your healing journey together.
How do I know if I need therapy?
If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or struggling in relationships, therapy can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from professional support. Many people find therapy helpful for personal growth and developing better coping skills.
What should I expect in our first session?
Our first session will focus on understanding your concerns, goals, and history. I'll explain how I work and answer any questions you have about therapy. This is also your chance to see if we feel like a good fit for working together.
How long does therapy typically take?
This varies greatly depending on your goals and circumstances. Some people feel better in a few months, while others benefit from longer-term work. We'll regularly check in about your progress and adjust our plan as needed.
Practical Questions
Here’s a quick guide to answer common questions about fees, virtual sessions, and rescheduling. I want to make sure you feel confident as you begin your therapy journey.
Do you accept insurance?
I'm a private-pay practice, which means I don't directly accept insurance. However, I can provide you with a superbill that you may be able to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Many people find that paying out-of-pocket gives them more control over their treatment.
What if I can't afford your full fee?
I have a limited number of sliding-scale spots available for those who qualify. Please mention financial concerns during our consultation call so we can discuss options.
How does virtual therapy work?
We'll meet through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You'll need a private space with good internet connection. Virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person for most concerns, and many clients find it more convenient.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
I ask for 48 hours notice for cancellations to avoid a cancellation fee. I understand that life happens, and we can work together to find appointment times that work for your schedule.
About Treatment
Here’s what you can expect from the therapeutic process, including the approaches I use and how we’ll measure progress. I’m committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where you can go at your own pace.
What types of therapy do you use?
I use an integrative approach that may include CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), person-centered therapy, and relational therapy techniques, depending on your needs and preferences.
Will you give me homework or assignments?
Sometimes I suggest between-session activities like journaling, practicing new communication skills, or self-care activities. These are always suggestions to support your progress, never requirements.
How do I know if therapy is working?
You might notice feeling more confident, sleeping better, having less anxiety, or handling relationship conflicts more effectively. We'll regularly check in about your progress and celebrate the changes you're making.
What if I don't feel comfortable talking about certain topics?
You're always in control of what you share and when. We'll go at your pace, and you never have to discuss anything you're not ready to explore.
Confidentiality & Safety
Confidentiality and safety are top priorities in our work together. Below are answers to questions about how your privacy is protected and how we’ll navigate sensitive situations with care and support.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes, with a few legal exceptions: if you're planning to harm yourself or someone else, if there's suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or if I'm court-ordered to release information. I'll always discuss any confidentiality concerns with you first when possible.
What if I'm still in contact with someone who hurt me?
Many people continue to have some contact with former partners due to children, work, or other circumstances. We can work on safety planning and developing skills to protect your emotional wellbeing in these situations.
Can you help if I'm not sure whether my relationship was actually abusive?
Absolutely. Many people struggle with this question. We can explore your experiences together and help you understand patterns and dynamics without forcing you to label anything before you're ready.
